
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences has a long history to cater a long cherished demand of the people of North-East India in the field of health. It is as autonomous Institute under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. It is registered under the Manipur Society Act 1860. It is shared by the seven North East States and hence the name.

Earlier the Institute was tenderly nurtured by great protagonists. A 300 bedded General Hospital was subsequently inaugurated by Y.B. Chavan, the then Union Home Minister, India on Oct 22, 1968. It is still being used as a main hospital block. On May 22, 1972 a foundation stone of the first ever medical college, on the soil of the state, under the banner of Manipur Medical College was laid by B.K. Nehru, the then Governor of Manipur and subsequently formal inaugural ceremony of the college was held on August 17, 1972.
On Sep 14, 1972, the Regional Medical College was established in place of the erstwhile college as a joint venture of the North Eastern States headed by the Government of Manipur and the central Government. A formal inauguration was made on Sept. 26, 1972 by Md. Alimuddin, the then Hon'ble Chief Minister of Manipur. The College was later renamed as North Eastern Regional Medical College under the management of North Eastern Medical College Society. It was run under the Ministry of Home, Govt. of India and it was the only medical college run by the Ministry of Home since August, 1976. Nearly 19 years later the college was again renamed as Regional Institute of Medical Sciences and its management was taken over by NEC, Ministry of DoNER, Government of India since April 1, 1995. After exactly 12 years on the historic day of April 1, this year the Institute comes under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
It is an institution of regional importance catering to the needs of the North Eastern Region in the field of medical education in both undergraduate and post graduate, bringing together in one place educational facilities for the training of personnel in all important branches of medical specialties. The objective of this premier institute is to impart quality medical education and ameliorate the health condition of the cosmopolitan population of the seven states of North Eastern Region ( excluding Assam ). RIMS is a 959 bedded teaching hospital, equipped with modern state of art equipments and teaching facilities having an intake capacity of 100 undergraduate and 73 Postgraduate Degree / Diploma seats. The Hospital normally provides services to more than 2.5 lakh out-door patients and admits over 31 thousand patients in a year. It has MEDLINE access from WHO, Tele-medicine Centre, a Regional Medical Library etc. The Institute is fulfilling the statutory norms of the Medical Council of India. It is affiliated to the Manipur University, Canchipur, Imphal.
In our Institute and Hospital seventeen Clinical Departments including six Super-speciality Units manage practically all types of disease conditions with support from pre-clinical and para-clinical departments. RIMS is the only Medical College of Regional nature in the country imparting medical education to students from 7 states in North Eastern region.
